Gilsonite or asphaltum is a naturally occurring soluble solid hydrocarbon which is formed through gradual transformation of crude oil and evaporation of its volatile compounds over a long period of time and is much more resistant comparing with bitumen.
Gilsonite is natural and mineral hydrocarbon and is soluble in aromatic petroleum-based solvents and bitumen, and due to its unique compatibility, is frequently used to harden softer petroleum products. Gilsonite mass is a shiny and glossy black substance. It is brittle and can be easily crushed into powder.
